Nearsightedness: Everything You Need to Know to Prevent it

If you can see objects closer to you clearly, but the objects at a distance are blurry, then you might be having an eye condition called myopia or short-sightedness. The condition occurs mainly among the youth and children. Short-sightedness happens in people who have the wrong eye shape.

Cannot see far objects clearly

If you find it difficult to see distant objects as clearly as nearby things, which is interfering with your normal daily life, it might be the onset of short-sightedness. You may also find yourself frequently having to come closer to see things. This is called myopia.

If you are experiencing short-sightedness, it is difficult to perform tasks comfortably. In other words, the quality of your vision is stopping you from carrying on daily activities. Consult an eye doctor who can diagnose the degree of your myopia and prescribe eyeglasses. If you are in a hurry, there are same day prescription glasses options, which will give the opportunity of getting your eyeglasses faster.

Make sure you wear the correct lenses. Prolonged usage of the wrong prescription can be detrimental to the health of your eyes both short-term and in the long run. So, wear the right lenses for the prescribed time only. It can optimize and correct your vision.

Cannot read signs while driving

If you find it difficult to read the road signs while driving or see objects clearly, you might be suffering from short-sightedness. You may have obtained your license at a young age, and you had a perfect vision at that time. But now, it has been several years, and you have not had an eye test for quite some time.

If this is you, it is time for some eye care to protect your vision. If you are still in your youth and not quite ready to start wearing glasses yet, try some home remedies. See how far that goes. Halt the myopia progression by wearing sunglasses to shield you from ultraviolet rays. Buy high-quality sunglasses. Otherwise, it can be detrimental.

Eat healthy stuff, including plenty of fruits, leafy greens, and vegetables. Your eyes benefit tremendously from a staple diet of fish items, such as salmon. Food that is high in omega-3 and fatty acids should be consumed in excess. You are likely to see the benefits to your eye health if you include these in your daily food consumption.

Narrowing the eyes to squint

Another symptom of short-sightedness is that you squint or shut your eyes in a slit to see objects, especially if the things are beyond a certain distance. Hence, you are constantly being jeered by your peers and friends, but you want to find a solution or change it.

Depending on the level of your condition, some doctors may advise you to wear a special lens overnight, which is called orthokeratology. This treatment does not require you to wear eyeglasses and can improve your squinting. If this option is suitable for you, talk to the doctor and see whether it can remedy your condition. Orthokeratology is an eye treatment for short-sightedness whereby the doctor implants a pair of soft contact lenses in your eyes. The polymeric contact lens is popularly called ICL, which stands for Implantable Collamer lens. The doctor makes a microscopic incision in your eyes, and the lens is embedded in there.

The excessive blinking of eyes

Short-sightedness can sometimes cause some people to blink excessively, which is a natural reflex to lubricate and clean your eyes. If you are doing this in excess, there is a need to see an eye doctor. However, if it is temporary, it may go off after a while, and there is nothing to worry about.

If your blinking is in excess or is affecting your daily activities, atropine eye drops can be used as a treatment or topical medication. However, you cannot get it over the counter from a pharmacy, and it must be prescribed by an eye doctor. The doses vary from person to person, depending on the condition.

Sometimes physicians can prescribe lens or laser surgery to improve your sight. The best thing about such remedies is that the treatment is a permanent solution. Some eye laser surgeries are lifelong, and you do not have to ever worry about your eyes. Surgeries involve the replacement of your natural lens with artificial lenses.

Migraines, headaches, nausea, and dizziness

Constant headaches or migraines due to eyestrain can also be due to short-sightedness, especially if your work puts a lot of strain on your eyes. Working on computers or watching television can exacerbate the pain and discomfort. Usually, it is accompanied by nausea and dizziness.

For young children, short-sightedness can be remedied quickly with some practical measures because their eye muscles are still developing. Spend some time outside every day and gradually increase your outdoor activities. If done at an early age, this can correct your vision, if it is just the beginning of short-sightedness.

Apart from enough outdoor activities, get proper sleep and reduce your eyestrain, such as watching less television and restricting your screen time. If you absolutely must work on your computer, take enough breaks in between to give rest to your eyes. Proper parental guidance and encouragement can play a role here.
